Patient Information
Have you previously had a slipped disc or spine surgery for it?
As a spine surgeon, who does a lot of revision work, I’ve seen many patients who have had a slipped disc and required surgery to alleviate their pain. However, there is a misconception that surgery is the end-all solution to back pain or leg pain caused by a slipped disc. In fact, there is a 5% risk of it happening again and so there are steps you can take to avoid a recurrence of a slipped disc after surgery.
If you’ve had surgery to correct a slipped disc, it’s important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully. Whilst rest and proper healing time are crucial for your body to heal and recover after surgery, I generally advise against lying around all day or slouching on the sofa. You should also continue with physical therapy to strengthen your back muscles and improve your posture.
In addition to these steps, there are several other things you can do to avoid a recurrence of a slipped disc after surgery:
1. Maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight puts additional stress on your back, which can exacerbate back pain and lead to a recurrence of a slipped disc. Losing weight can reduce your risk of developing back pain. This is difficult to achieve with exercise alone, if you are in pain. So we work with dieticians and nutritionists who can help you.
2. Practice good posture Sitting or standing with poor posture can increase the strain on your back muscles and cause a slipped disc. Make sure to sit and stand with your back straight and your shoulders relaxed.
3. Exercise regularly Regular exercise can help strengthen the muscles that support your spine, reducing the risk of another slipped disc. Low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, and cycling are great options.
4. Lift objects properly When lifting objects, always use proper lifting techniques. Bend your knees and keep your back straight, and use your leg muscles to lift the object, not your back.
5. Consider pain management options If you’re experiencing pain after surgery, talk to your surgeon about pain management options. There are many non-invasive options, such as physical therapy and pain medication, that can help alleviate your pain without resorting to surgery.
At The Spine MDT, our mission is to find the least invasive treatment that offers the longest lasting result.
